About jwaughmcdiarmid

I have been teaching now for 23 years (boy that makes me sound old!) and I have loved every minute! I have taught every grade from kindergarten to grade 6. I can't wait to teach grade 2/3 this year as children this age are so fun and are like little sponges :) I am excited to implement the Orton-Gillingham Approach to language in my class for struggling readers.

Numeration Unit

Your grade 2 child will be busy in class reviewing numbers to 50 and grade 3’s up to 100. They will use many manipulatives such as base 10 blocks, number lines, ten frames and counters to represent and compare numbers. Below are the curriculum expectations we are covering:
– represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 50/100, using a variety of tools
– read and print in words whole numbers to twenty/fifty, using meaningful contexts
– determine, using concrete materials, the ten that is nearest to a given two-digit number, and justify the answer
– locate whole numbers to 100 on a number line and on a partial number line that goes from 34 to 41
-communicate why one number is larger or smaller than another

Communication in math
In grade 2/3, a big focus is explaining their knowledge orally and in writing. For example “How do you know 35 is bigger than 25?”
A student response should look like: “I know 35 is bigger because it is 10 more. When you count you say 25 first. 35 is 10 more than 25. 25+10=35”

**We will be having a test the 1st week of October
